Kern™: Kern, a warm terracotta carrying the weight of fired clay.

This is a deep, grounded red-brown, the colour of old brick after rain or a clay pot pulled from a long kiln. It carries warmth close to the skin, less orange than pure terracotta yet less crimson than oxblood, sitting somewhere in the earthier middle. Running a hand across it feels like brushing a sun-warmed garden wall in late September, slightly chalky, slightly dry.

In morning light it softens towards dusty rose, relaxed and almost powdery; by afternoon the red pigment settles into its full weight and reads as proper fired clay. Under lamplight it turns inward, glowing with a quiet, cocooning warmth that verges on dried cherrywood.

It belongs in snugs, dining rooms, and small hallways where you want a sense of enclosure, and in bedrooms looking for steady warmth rather than drama. It sits well with aged oak, brass, unlacquered linen, tumbled limestone floors, and alongside softer Knuckles greens and chalky off-whites.

Crafted the Knuckles way. A water-based, low-VOC, high-coverage interior emulsion, hand-mixed in small batches in the UK, loaded with rich pigment, and finished to a silky matt surface that reads deeply and without glare.

Coverage is around twelve square metres per litre, with two coats recommended for even depth. An A6 sample is the kindest way to see how Kern shifts in the specific light of your own rooms.
